The Power of Meditation

Meditation has been around for centuries, yet if you were to ask an average person about it they would probably know very little if anything at all. Almost every religion that ever existed used some form of meditation for it’s purposes. However it is still one of those concepts no one truly knows how to explain entirely or correctly and there is nothing wrong with that. In the case of meditation, the good old: “You won’t know unless you try.”, really holds truth. 

What is meditation in the first place?

In case you are one of those people who are familiar with the concept, by all means skip this paragraph. However, for the purposes of this blog post I feel like I should give some insight into what meditation is for those poor, unfortunate souls *cue the Disney music* who have not yet had the pleasure to experience all the benefits of meditation.
There are a number of different definitions but perhaps the simplest way to put it is this:

Meditation is a practice which is used in order to achieve a state of complete peace and higher awareness.

Sounds wacky, right? At least it did to me when I first got the urge to find out more about what it was. I was not sure how sitting and doing “nothing” can help me with anything in life, but of course I was quick to judge something without trying it or fully understanding it first – a very common mistake.
The reason why I think no one is able to clearly define meditation is because it is essentially different for everyone. A state of complete peace and higher awareness is something that can only be felt, not explained with words and it can come in many forms. However, one thing everyone can agree on is that once you reach that state it is the best feeling in the world. 
Einstein said I think 99 times and find nothing. I stop thinking, swim in the silence and the truth comes to me.That is the essence of meditation. Stop thinking and watch the answers appear in your mind. It is a connection to your higher self, and you can call it whatever you want: God, subconscious mind, the Universe (which is what I like to use) but the connection is there no matter what you choose to call the thing you feel connected to. No search engine, no guru, no spiritual teacher and no book can give you as many true answers as silence can.
Apart from the spiritual benefits, meditation also significantly reduces stress and has positive effects on both physical and mental health. Letting go of the past and future only to be fully present and conscious of the now is a very liberating act, but funny enough what you gain from that liberation is control. What I mean by that is, by only acknowledging the present moment you recognize that you are in full control over your state of being, you put yourself in that state and therefore no external force can make you change it. To me that is one of the most fascinating things about meditation.

How to meditate?

 

You really shouldn’t be asking that question. What you should be doing is understanding the concept as much as you can until you feel secure enough to try it and then let the rest happen by itself. Just go with the flow. Cool thing about meditation is that you can do it anywhere, anytime, in any clothing, position or place – it’s entirely up to you. You want to be able to get yourself into that state, how you do it is not important. You can sit, lay, stand, run, breathe not breathe (not advisable), or do a handstand. Whatever rocks your boat.

My experience and how I started

I only recently hopped on the meditation train and even though I am late to the party I am extremely glad that I am here. Like the average person I knew next to nothing about the meditation or why it’s good for you. Before I started my journey of self-discovery (I guess you could call it), I hadn’t given much thought to spirituality. In fact, I thought it was rather silly and perhaps good for certain types of people but definitely not for me. Growing up, my family was not very religious but to be fair my curiosity was not very ignited by this subject either. Only when I started experimenting with positive thinking and the law of attraction did I realize that there might be more to meditation and spirituality than I thought.
About a year ago, I was doing some research on the internet about ways to reduce stress because I was working a very stressful job at the time and of course meditation came up. Skeptical at first, I decided to dig a little deeper and see what all the fuss is about. After acquiring the basic knowledge, the idea seemed to make sense to me so I decided to try it. However my approach was totally wrong. Learning about meditation and all the different ways you could do it made me even more stressed out because I was afraid that I am not doing it like it’s supposed to be done. What I didn’t know at the time is that there is no wrong or right way to do it, but nevertheless I gave up after the first few tries.

A few months later, I was watching something on Youtube when in the suggested videos I noticed a thumbnail of an average looking guy paused in the middle of his sentence with the title “How to Actually Make Money”. I had a job but the idea of making money on the side seemed inviting to me so I decided to click on the video expecting to hear something about affiliate marketing or stocks. However, what Kyle talked about in his video was the last thing I expected to hear. I will not go into much detail and I will link the video down below if you want to watch it (which I highly recommend), but I was so intrigued that I decided to watch the rest of his videos as well.
Everything he was saying was resonating with me so well, that when I found his 100 Day Self-Connection Experiment I watched it in one sitting. He explained meditation in an entirely different and more reasonable way which got me thinking into trying it again.

What I’ve learned

 

Kyle explained meditation in such a simple way that I knew I had to be crazy not to try it again. He basically said all you need to do to start is just to pick a quiet place, close your eyes and let your mind go wild. You are supposed to watch your thoughts like a movie playing on the big screen and not do anything to disturb them. You can think about whatever you want and go wherever your thoughts take you. However, that chaos of thoughts eventually subsides and without even knowing it you enter that state – a state of peace and of elevated consciousness. The best word I can find to describe the feeling is floating.
At first you feel a little weird, you’re doing something new and unknown, but after a couple of times it almost becomes the most natural thing in the world. You almost become addicted to that feeling, now I can’t imagine waking up in the morning and not meditating for at least 15 minutes. There is something so soothing about the silence and the clarity you receive from it, that it is hardly possible to ever throw that feeling away. 

All in all…

Try it. Please. Give it a week. One week, fifteen minutes every day. And then decide if it’s for you or not. I guarantee you will feel different. Some of my most important life decisions were made while meditating and now I’ve come to believe that those fifteen to thirty minutes are the most valuable minutes of my day because that’s when all the important stuff happens. Purpose.

I bet the first thought that comes to your mind as you read the word purpose is the Justin Bieber album. Although it’s a good album, it is not the topic of this post. Sorry. (Pun intended)
Anyway, today I decided to write about whatever the hell I want. The past few weeks have been really busy and the excuse I was making for not taking the time to write on my blog was: “I don’t have the time.” The difference between not taking the time and not having the time is enormous. Because we always have time, we just choose to let it slip away. Why do we do that though? What makes us think that we are so privileged to waste this time that we were given by doing the things that we don’t want to do and not doing the things that we truly want to do?
The last thing I wanted to do was work, yet I chose to dedicate all of my time to it and completely neglect the thing that would bring me joy which is to write. All the while I was doing that I was thinking:Why? Why are my priorities aligned in this order? Is it supposed to be like this, work first happiness last? Is that truly what life is about? I highly doubt it. In fact I choose not to believe it because that is not the life I want to live. We often get so caught up in what is going on around us, that we forget about our purpose.
Our purpose is not to worry about how are we going to pay our bills, or how are we going to make more money, or what are we going to do with our lives, or who are we going to meet and when and why and all of the other unnecessary things that we obsess about. 

We are alive. Our purpose is to live.

I recently watched a TED Talk by Mel Robbins on Youtube. It is called How to stop screwing yourself over. (It’s really good, you should check it out) The things she talks about are really useful, but are more practical in nature and don’t really correlate to the point I am trying too reach with this post, however one part of the video really stuck with me and made me think. At one point she asked the public if they knew what is the probability of us being alive in this moment, right now? I bet you have no clue, same as the public. Well, she continued and said something along the lines that the scientists have done the math and taken into consideration all the wars and disasters and what not only to come to the next piece of information. 

The probability of you (Yes, YOU) being alive right here in this moment is 1:400,000,000,000.

Just let that sink in for a moment. In case you don’t know how to read a four followed by twelve zeros, the probability of you being alive is one in four hundred trillion. Four. Hundred. Trillion.
It makes you think about whether you really want to be wasting your life spending more time doing the things you don’t like versus the things you are passionate about. It’s really not a hard choice to make, once you know how exceptionally extraordinary you are and how small the amount of time you posses is.

Thinking about this made me realize that we are all miracles. We’ve all been miracles ever since we started out and by started out I mean as we were only tiny little fertilized cells in our moms’ bellies. It would be a shame to waste a miracle and that’s our job, that’s our purpose. Our purpose is to live up to our miracle selves and start living accordingly and in sync to what and who we are. Because as the quote from above says, we only need the courage to start and the courage to succeed will follow. Honor the miracle, remind yourself of this everyday and just be ecstatic that you have the privilege to be alive

Setting Goals

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where the New Year’s Eve is approaching rapidly and you are thinking to yourself that from January 1. of the new year you are going to become a completely different person? You are going to get healthy and fit, be more productive, be a better friend, student, family member? Perhaps you wanted to drop some weight, you were determined, motivated and in the first two weeks everything seemed to be going great however in the third week an unexpected circumstance occurred and suddenly you found yourself in a predicament. I have so much studying to do for this test, I can’t possibly go running today or I have to go to my cousins birthday, everybody is going to think I am so weird if I tell them I can’t eat carbs. Sound familiar?
Been there done that my friends, however in learning from my own mistakes I found that this is nothing more than poor planing. Anybody can set a goal, but why do so many people fail to achieve their goals while only a few succeed?

How to set goals?

In order to be successful in achieving your goal you must first set oneIf you are not a “goal setting” type of person that’s OK, but you still have things you want in life right? Those things are your goals. Perhaps you want to own a Ferrari, or have a big family, or move to Japan, but whatever it is you must stop viewing the things you want merely as “the things you want” or “wishes” and start viewing them as goals. Once you start doing that, your mind moves those things from the Unlikely to Ever Happen drawer where, chances are, they have been sitting for quite a while and into the Possible drawer.
You must use your brain though. If your goal is to live to be 300 years old, jump from an airplane with no parachute and hope to survive the landing and have a dinosaur as a pet, hate to break it to you but it ain’t gonna happen. I truly believe that anything is possible, and I would be the first person to tell you as much but some things are simply not possible and therefore you must try to remain realistic. And when I say realistic I don’t mean lower your expectations, oh no. You want to own a Ferrari? Realistic. Have a big family? Realistic. Move to Japan? Realistic. Become a billionaire? Realistic. Have everything you want? Realistic. Ask yourself what you want and determine what is going to make you happy. Define what success means to you. For some people success means owning a company for others it is having the freedom to travel whenever they want. Anything you can possibly imagine is realistic and there are so many ways that can take you there. Finding those ways, committing to them and planning to succeed are a whole other story.

How to achieve goals?


So, you filled your Possible drawer with all the realistic things you want. Now what?
Once you have decided on the things you want (and remember the Possible drawer is infinite, you can always put more stuff in it), now it’s time to start your journey towards those things. That journey starts with planning.
Let’s go back to the example with weight loss. The goal is to lose 20 kg. That goal, however, is only a thought floating around in your mind easily overshadowed by other thoughts that are perhaps more urgent at the moment (such as that big test that’s coming up). So naturally, your mind focuses more on the test than on the weight loss why? Because the test is EVERYWHERE! You have your calendar and you circled the date of the test, you have your books, notebooks, notes, you are chatting with your friend about what’s going to be on the test, you spend most of your time learning and in all that chaos the last thing on your mind are the 20 kg you want to lose. But in order to study, you must eat! And because you “don’t have time” to make yourself a nice, healthy meal you turn to snacks and fast food and the number on the scale shows that you are no closer to your goal, in fact you might even be further away from it than ever.
This situation would have been 100 percent avoidable had you taken one afternoon, hell even one hour to sit down with your pen and paper and write down not only your goal, but the actions you PLAN to take in order to achieve it.

This is from my bullet journal. Which ever goal I decide to set for myself, I write it down and next to it I write the actions I am going to take in order to achieve it. (I took a picture of these pages before filling them out because I don’t like to share my personal goals with anyone but hopefully you get the idea.)

So, if I were to write down “lose 20 kg” as a goal, in the actions section I would write all the things I would do to make sure I achieved that goal. For example I would write: meal prep, running every day 20 minutes, start a notebook with useful weight loss tips, research etc. I would plan my time so that everyday I would have at least 20 minutes for running even if it meant waking up 20 minutes earlier, and every week I would have a free afternoon for meal prep. I would research every weight loss method until I found the one that works for me and learn about nutritional values of different foods. I would set aside a budget so I would never have to worry whether I have enough money for healthy food. I would make a plan of all those actions and incorporate it into my daily schedule.
It is not enough to only write down “lose 20 kg” because your brain will be like OK, but how do I do that? And by doing this you instantly give your brain an answer and therefore you avoid failure.
You see, once you dissect a big goal into the smallest of actions, it suddenly isn’t so big anymore. It is only a combination of all those small actions that comprise a big goal, and if you do those small actions consistently, success is guaranteed. This process moves your wanted things from the Possible drawer to Likely to Happen drawer and that’s where you want all of your things to be. 

You can go about your goal setting and achieving however you want but the method I like to use the most is this one. Also I would like to add that I have goals and actions sections on three different scales. First is goals and actions in life (the biggest), second is goals and actions in a year (smaller), and the third is goals and actions in a month (the smallest). So if the life goal is “lose 20 kg”, the smaller one (goal for one year) would be “lose 10 kg” and the goal for one month would be “lose a little less than 1 kg” and to all of that I would add the actions that are going to get me there.
The weight loss example is pretty small in scale but this really works for any goal you have set for yourself. If your goal is owning a business then in the actions section for that month you could write down “read a book about entrepreneurship” or something similar. 

Also, it is important to mention that visualization goes hand in hand with goal setting. I will be doing posts on visualization alone so make sure to check that out, but for now I just want to say that visualization is almost as important as planning. Surrounding yourself with pictures, inspirational quotes and imagery can really make achieving your goals much faster and easier.

Let’s talk positive

What is positive thinking?

Now, I know you must be thinking: Well thanks, but I’m pretty sure I can google it. If you are not thinking that- great, but if you are I would recommend you keep reading because this blog post is not going to be what you might expect.

By Merriam-Webster’s definition, positivity is the quality or state of being positive. Now, if you went to Google and tried to research positive thinking, you would find plenty of resources from which you could acquire the necessary knowledge to start implementing positivity into your life. That’s what I did because hey, you gotta start somewhere right? WRONG.
What most of those resources won’t tell you is that you are almost certainly setting yourself up for failure if you believe that changing your complete mindset is as easy as waking up every morning and saying I love you to yourself (no hard feelings towards affirmations though). It can be very discouraging and frustrating when you have a false perception of how positive thinking works from the get-go. No, it’s not enough to just think happy thoughts all the time and no matter how much I wanted and tried to believe that it is, reality was always there to put me back in check. Conclusion: over-simplification is as dangerous and debilitating as over-complication.
I am not an expert, but given what I know now I would define positive thinking as ones ability to successfully and frequently eradicate negative thoughts until no negative thought can even begin to take shape in ones mind. Sounds fun huh?
You might not like it, but it all comes down to how disciplined you are in controlling which thoughts to entertain. Decision making, persistence and even planning are some of the key factors which can determine if you are on the path to a positive mindset or not. So how do you get there?

If positive thinking is so hard for you, then why do you do it?

I have been so immersed in this subject for the past few years that now I don’t know anything else. It became a habit, however I do sometimes slip back into my old ways. If you want to know what my old ways were you will also have to read one of my next posts. One thing I do know for sure is that positive thinking changed my life in ways I could not even imagine and if I had to go through the occasional frustration and hardships again I most certainly would. Why? Because I strongly believe in the good old anything worth having does not come easy and a positive mindset is one of the most valuable things a person can have.


In my next blog posts regarding positivity I will share with you my journey to a more positive mindset, advice on how you can start incorporating more positivity into your life, my thoughts on why some people are more positive than others, how to use positive thinking to improve the lives of the people around you and much, much more. Also, I am going to include some of my favorite resources on positive thinking as well as some other useful stuff.

First blog post ever!

I am really happy right now.

When I decided to get into blogging I never knew it would be this exciting. Maybe it’s because it’s my first post but the level of excitement right now is real.
Today seemed like a good day to start this journey not only because it’s my birthday (yes, it’s my birthday) but because I’ve been thinking a lot about doing this and I kept postponing it because I got it into my mind that in needs to be the “right time”. Guess what? IT’S NEVER THE RIGHT TIME TO DO ANYTHING!

So you might as well just do it now and save yourself some time.

The alarm clock went off at 4:45 a.m. today, and as I woke up I realized that I am not particularly happy nor sad. In that moment I knew I had to do this. You see, whenever you find yourself in a situation where you don’t know what you are feeling or what you are supposed to feel, the best thing to do is to do something drastic. For me, that was writing this first post. No more postponing, no more excuses. I knew that this would make me happy and getting over that fear of the unknown is honestly the best feeling ever. 

What’s this blog going to be about?

The process of figuring this out was a long and hard one for me. One thing I can certainly say about myself is that I have a lot and I mean a lot of different interests. However, there are a few things that are more important to me than others, the ones I always feel really happy about when sharing them with other people. So here’s a list of all the things that make me happy and that you will be reading about on this blog:
